You’ll notice a different pace of life on Jura, where everyone has time to stop and pass the time of day, the light seems different, and you’ll return home feeling rested like never before.
Tigh na Maraiche, named “House of the Mariners” in Gaelic, in recognition of the sea-faring crofters who lived there over the generations, is tucked away in the tiny crofting community of Keils, just a short distance from the main village of Craighouse.
Surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, it is the perfect spot to truly “get away from it all”.
Walking into the cottage through the lean-to sunroom overlooking the garden, you’ll find very traditional, welcoming and cosy accommodation.
The main feature of the open-plan living/dining/kitchen area is the stone fireplace and wood-burning stove, ideal for a cosy evening around the fire.
Traditional wood lined ceiling and interior décor give you the idea that you may have stepped back in time, yet you have a good Wi-Fi connection as well as a fully equipped kitchen.
The comfy double bed promises a good night’s sleep after a day exploring everything the island has to offer.
You’ll love relaxing in the wee sunroom, whilst listening to the sounds of the sea in the distance.
There are two stone buildings, one which offers storage for bikes and kayaks, the other houses the utility room, with freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer.
Just a five-minute walk down the hill and you’re on the shore looking over the very picturesque Small Isles Bay – you can also catch a good glimpse of the bay from the garden of Tigh na Maraiche.
Beyond the islands in the bay, Knapdale can be seen on the mainland, separated from Jura by the stretch of water known as the Sound of Jura.
Another five minutes along the road, takes you into Craighouse, the only village on Jura, where there is a hotel, the world-famous Jura Distillery, the village shop/post office, and a gift shop/tearoom.
Climb the famous “Paps” of Jura and explore the miles of endless mountain.

Peace and quiet.. and that wee cottage.. built in the 1740’s.. with a history lesson.. that reflects the life of the people on the Island and their descendants.. the cottage says it all.. we can’t think of anything that was negative.. not an easy life being a ‘Crofter’..
We enjoyed everything.. I’m not wanting to tell you it’s a ‘wee gem’ because we want to go back.. (and want all the dates available to ourselves).. but to remain true to ourselves.. and remain authentic in our review.. focus on these words.. this was the ‘paradise’ we both so much needed.. part conv...

Great location, superb views, an island where the pace of life slows right down.
A traditional crofting cottage, which although tired in places, the owner is clearly making progress on updating this property. it is well equipt - dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, comfortable bed, new windows ...

The property had everything we needed. Sitting outside in the evening was very nice.
The log burner was cosy after the sun went down.
It was only a few minutes drive to the local shop and distillery.
That being said, some mould remover and a lick of paint wouldn't go amiss.
shop and distillery.
